love this CD! If you are a fan of the Black Eyed Peas music you will not be disappointed by this new album. I've always loved the BEP's because their music makes me want to get up dance and it's always funky. I personally do not listen to a lot of mainstream music. I prefer EDM like House, breaks, drum and bass and trance. The BEP's are one of the few popular groups I love.
This album has fresh electronic vibe and Will.I.AM has done another great job producing the tracks-they sound great!!! If you like to dance you'll love it. Boom Boom Pow reminded my of old school breaks/ rollorskating music from my youth in the 80's. Rock That Body is very electro housey which I love. I've enjoyed all the tracks on this album very much.
Don't listen to the negative reviews out there this is a fantastic album!!! One of the earlier reviews called the sound bubble gum sounding. Honestly-do all people that hear a dance track have to call it bubble gummy? There is a BIG difference between good dance music and a bubble gum sound and this album belongs to the former. I think they don't get what the Black Eyed Peas are trying to achieve at all. I thought this album was quite evolved compared to most of the crap they play on the radio these days. If you don't get the sound that's cool. I don't look for 'messages' or rely on on CD's as public service announcements. It has to have a good beat and make me want to get up and shake it...

This album killed it for me right from the beginning. While driving home from the cd store the first four tracks left me grinning ear to ear. I have put Welcome To The World Of Plastic Beach and White Flag back to back again and again. Snoop is all style, he could spit nonsensical lyrics all day and it'll move you. The beat is addictive, I love Albarn's ability to keep that chill, full frontal gorillaz synth melody rolling, holding on to a high note transitioning from measure to measure. Its a perfect track for snoop, its got west coast written all over it, and Albarns got some affinity for west coast hip hop (Del) and chooses well where to utilize it.
White Flag is monstrous. I just love the fusion. It is so unique, so exotic, perfect to follow up snoop- both tracks describe this concept album, giving you a depth and conception right off the bat. I love the orchestra, but, I guess its just my taste, sometimes I skip the first minute just to hear Bashy and Kano rip it so hard on that island beat. It's almost the antithesis of Snoop, it's all about the clever tight lyrics, but Bashy's got this brash style reminiscent of Busta for me. He's just raw, cant say theres no style there. Kano completes the whole, lovely synthesis of style and lyricism from both Mc's, and again great juxtaposition with the beat and National Orchestra For Arabic Music. I love it.

Other highlights... well theres a ton. Actually 95% of the songs are worth listening to, for me an improvement from the last records (lookin at you Punk, Dare, White Light). I just think those songs in the Gorillaz catalog are less composed, or too upfront. They leave everything on the table right in front of your eyes, it's kinda boring. Stylo almost made it there in my book, but it certainly redeemed itself- its just too infective. Its like I love some of the other songs more, but I have to listen to Stylo just to hear that beat again. Mos Def, Albarn and Womack all make it a great listen. I thought it was a little predictable/standard at first, but theres enough there to keep me coming back.

To me its like Gorillaz are Jackson, Zeppelin, Nirvana etc. in their hayday, whether you're into mainstream or not, the sound is quality.

Kelly Clarkson makes history on this week's Billboard Hot 100 with the largest leap to No. 1 in the chart's 50-year history. Her new single, "My Life Would Suck Without You," rockets 97-1 after selling 280,000 digital downloads in its first week of availability.

The song is also faring well at radio, jumping 58-38 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and 27-18 on the Mainstream Top 40 list.

"My Life" introduces Clarkson's March 17 RCA album "All I Ever Wanted." This is the second time the artist has set the record for largest jump to No. 1. She took her "American Idol" victory song, "A Moment Like This," 52-1 on the chart dated October 5, 2002.

That mark lasted nearly five years until Maroon 5 soared 64-1 with "Makes Me Wonder" in May 2007 and had been broken four more times since, most recently by Britney Spears' "Womanizer" (96-1).

"My Life" is Clarkson's first No. 1 since her debut single, though she has placed six other songs in the top 10 during this time, including the No. 2-peaking "Since U Been Gone" in April 2005.

Elsewhere on the Hot 100, Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" featuring Colby O'Donis slips to No. 2 after three weeks on top. Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" slides 2-3, while Kanye West's "Heartless" is down 3-4 despite being the chart's greatest airplay gainer.

Claude Kelly Hits Big With Clarkson, Spears

Last summer, singer/songwriter Claude Kelly told Billboard he hoped to work with Kelly Clarkson in the future. Six months later, not only has he co-written the pop singer's latest single, "My Life Would Suck Without You," but he's sharing in its record-breaking success.

As previously reported, the song jumps 97-1 this week on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a record for the largest leap to the top in the history of the chart.

"This is a huge deal for me. I'm beyond words," the 28-year-old New York native tells Billboard. "I feel very accomplished and relieved to know that hard work definitely pays off."

The lead single from Clarkson's March 17 RCA album "All I Ever Wanted," "My Life Would Suck Without You" was co-written with writer/producer Max Martin (Britney Spears) and songwriter Dr. Luke (Katy Perry). "Max had an idea of some of the concepts. They came up with the music, Max threw some ideas at me, and then they threw me in the mix," Kelly says of the songwriting process.

The song is Kelly's second top 10 Hot 100 this week. He also co-wrote Britney Spears' "Circus," which is No. 10 after peaking at No. 3 last month.

Coming up, look for Kelly's work on new albums from R. Kelly ("Expect a creative, soulful, classic R. All-American Rejects - It Ends Tonight

"It Ends Tonight" will provide a suitably dreamy sounding late evening mood for the band's eager fans, but it fails to reach the distinctiveness of the previous hits "Dirty Little Secret" and "Move Along".

It seems that All-American Rejects have been inescapable for the past year on pop radio although they have only released 2 hit singles during that time. However, those 2 singles, "Dirty Little Secret" and "Move Along," are two of the most durable upbeat pop hits of the past 12 months. Now, to help consolidate their success, the band have released a soaring pop ballad to take them through the 2006 holidays.

"It Ends Tonight" features the nearly over-the-top, but ultimately endearing, vocals of Tyson Ritter and an instrumental mix that puts it squarely in classic rock ballad territory. The lyrics kick off in intriguing fashion with "Your subtleties / They strangle me," but that is as good as it gets. Ultimately, it's a grandly ambiguous tune about the end of a generic relationship.

"It Ends Tonight" is rushing up the pop singles chart to be the 3rd major hit from the album Move Along just as the band makes plans to re-enter the studio to record their 3rd studio album. Look for this song to close out 2006 near, or in, the pop top 10.

The biggest up side of "Crush" is that it proves this year's American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is a capable pop singer. Some worried that his voice would not fit a mainstream tune. Archuleta's voice is easily the best thing here. However, this is cookie cutter, safe, forgettable pop. Hopefully, for the next single David Archuleta's admittedly impressive pipes will be used for a truly worthy song.

While it was clear this past year on American Idol eventual winner David Cook had a comfortable home waiting on the rock end of the mainstream pop spectrum, the comfortable niche for runner-up David Archuleta was much less obvious. His first single "Crush" proves that Archuleta is easily up to the task of finessing a mainstream pop tune. Warm, inviting vocals pull the listener in here.

Unfortunately, the song itself and production don't do much to fully engage listeners. Music, lyrics and arrangement are predictable. This record promises much but delivers too little.

The reaction to "Crush" has proven that David Archuleta has a strong audience waiting for his music. Initial sales have been strong enough to push the song to a #2 debut on the Billboard Hot 100. This song is unlikely to significantly grow his audience, but it does prove he easily has the sound and chops to be a mainstream pop singer of signficance.

Augustana - Boston

If you are looking for another pretty, mainstream pop-rock song to tug at your heartstrings, "Boston," by the Calfornia-based band Augustana, is your ticket. It gained a big boost on pop radio in 2006 after having been included in the soundtrack to the TV show One Tree Hill. Fortunately, "Boston" is worth the attention. The melody is indeed beautiful, and a clever ironic twist in the lyrics is memorable.

Some of the most memorable pop-rock ballads capture a specific type of moment or feeling that makes the words of the song meaningful for millions of fans at the time the song becomes a hit, and, sometimes, for many years to come. "Boston," the first major pop hit from the California-based band Augustana, stands a chance at falling into this category. The central element of the song's lyrics is the feeling of a woman that she wants to travel across the country to an entirely new environment in order to escape the pain of the present.

The Backstreet Boys are not every music fan's cup of tea, but, simply put, this album consists of one beautiful pop song after another. The incomparably lush harmonies and instantly pleasing melodies are a bit overwhelming when taken as a complete album, so the group remains at its best as a singles band. The good news is that every one of these songs is radio friendly. As Timbaland tops the pop singles chart with the unapologetic adult contemporary sound of "Apologize," it's time for radio programmers to welcome the Boys back.
Sympathetic Production

In a very wise move, the Backstreet Boys have fully abandoned the Max Martin sound of many of their early hits and, instead, are working with producers sympathetic to their efforts to sound like an adult vocal group. Dan Muckala, producer and co-songwriter of the group's hit single "Incomplete" from their last album Never Gone, is the producer of the bulk of the material here. However, other top studio pros like Emanuel Kiriakou (Nick Lachey's "What's Left of Me"), John Shanks (Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway"), and Billy Mann (Pink's "Stupid Girls") work their magic, too.

The Purest Pop

The sound leans to adult contemporary, but contemporary pop music doesn't get much more pure than this. Memorable melodies, interwoven choral harmonies, piano, strings, and gentle use of guitar and drums combine for straightforward songs that will engage most pop fans. There are a few cuts, most notably "Any Other Way" and "Panic," that add rock elements to the group's sound but it only takes one cut like the first single "Inconsolable" to realize the group is concentrating on fleshing out their most comfortable pop territory. Fellow boy band veteran JC Chasez of *NSYNC takes the Backstreet Boys into upbeat pop territory familiar to both goups with his production and songwriting talents.

Sara Bareilles is one of the first new pop stars of 2008. Just a small snippet of this song played on a TV commercial for Rhapsody and Tivo is enough to catch the attention of music fans looking for a snappy pop tune. The success of "Love Song," almost certainly headed to the pop top 10, will give Bareilles much deserved additional exposure for her album Little Voice released this past summer. Although working in the now crowded field of female piano-playing singer-songwriters, she is a unique voice worthy of attention.

The recent success of hits such as "Apologize" and "Bubbly" have proven there is a significant portion of the pop music audience hungry for mainstream, catchy songs that tweak emotions but ultimately are not too complex or difficult to decipher. The pounding piano chords of "Love Song" are catchy enough they will have you humming along before you are cognizant of all of the words.

Sara Bareilles is a self-trained piano-playing singer-songwriter who has the gift of describing her experiences with love relationships and life in ways that immediately connect with an audience. This talent is in even greater evidence throughout her album Little Voice, and, if you like "Love Song," I heartily encourage checking out the album. Comparisons will be made with the likes of Fiona Apple and even Norah Jones, but Bareilles has her own appealing, uncluttered sound that will easily pick up new fans.

Much like the success last fall of Feist and her hit "1,2,3,4," TV commercials have given another artist much needed exposure and given us perhaps our first new pop star of 2008. Sara Bareilles may not have intended to write this "Love Song," but pop fans are happy she did.

Natasha Bedingfield - Pocketful of Sunshine

When Natasha Bedingfield burst into the consciousness of US pop fans in the fall of 2005, she was a breath of fresh air with intelligent, literate lyrics and a sassy vocal tone to match. Unfortunately, her second solo album, massively reworked from her corresponding second album in the UK, is simply another professional, corporately polished pop record. Songs and vocals are reasonably solid, but it's hard to hear inspiration.

Scrubbed and Reworked Version of Bedingfield's UK Second Album

It's never a good sign when an artist releases an album on one side of the Atlantic and the record label gets cold feet delaying the album on the other side of the Atlantic indefinitely. Following her huge debut splash with the album Unwritten, record label executives were understandably eager for new material. In this context N.B. was released in the UK with lead single "I Wanna Have Your Babies." Controversy ensued over the single and its accompanying video prompting an indefinite delay for the album's release in the US. Now, the album Pocketful of Sunshine is out in the US with half of the songs from N.B. and the rest new tracks. "I Wanna Have Your Babies" is nowhere to be seen.

Attention Wanes While Listening

The biggest problem with Pocketful of Sunshine is that it's very easy to find one's mind wandering while listening. Natasha Bedingfield has an appealing, aggressive vocal style. However, even that animated singing approach isn't enough to keep boring, repetitive lyrical content from sinking the album. Admittedly, Bedingfield has stated that she has moved to a point in life where she is looking for a long-term partner and is more focused on romance. However, from the songs here, unfortunately, her love life seems rather dull. There is neither a good dose of dramatic angst nor giddy excitement over potential partners.

Enough Artistic Credibility to Wait for the Third Album

The best moments here include a few moments of pretty longing on "Soulmate" and the irrepressibly sunny, but forgettable "Love Like This" featuring Sean Kingston. However, the bracing catharis of "Unwritten" feels far away. Natasha Bedingfield's voice is strong enough and her past words have shown enough flash that I will wait for a third album and hope for the return of the brash artist we all first met. There's nothing unpleasant here, but the album feels ultimately skippable. Most pop fans hoped for much more.

Her first album Dangerously In Love was a fun, celebratory record, but ultimately it lacks the depth of B'Day. The new album is the work of a woman with focus, energy, empathy, and vocal firepower to spare.

Dreamgirls Inspiration

Much of B'Day crackles with the suppressed energy of a woman who has been surrounded by more than her fair share of controlling and authoritarian men. This focus led many fans to concern for her relationship with rapper and music mogul Jay-Z. However, Beyonce explains the inspiration for much of the album in her bonus section for fans at the end of B'Day.

The new album was put together after shooting ended on the film Dreamgirls which stars Beyonce in the role of Deena Jones. Beyonce put together the songs on B'Day having in mind everything she wished that her character could have said and sung in the movie.

Fearless - TAYLOR SWIFT

Christina Aguilera is lining up electronic-oriented artists such as Sia Furler, Goldfrapp and Ladytron to collaborate with her on her fourth studio album, which she'll continue to work on in 2009.

In a teleconference with reporters, Aguilera acknowledged influence on "You Are What You Are," a moody, ambient remake of her hit "Beautiful" from the upcoming "Keeps Getting Better: A Decade of Hits" and confirmed the Zero 7 associate and solo artist will be working with her on the new album.

"I'm definitely a fan of Sia's," said Aguilera, who previously told Billboard about her desire to pursue a more "futuristic" sound on the album. "I was thrilled she also wanted to work together and, in turn, was a fan of mine."

Aguilera said the two plan to hit the studio in January but are "setting the wheels in motion now ... I'm not exactly sure what we're gonna get when we get in the studio together, but (as) with all great things I'll go in and there's probably magic to be had."

Aguilera said she's been listening to "a lot" of Sia, Goldfrapp and Ladytron during the past year, which impacted not only "You Are What You Are" but also the "Genie in a Bottle" revamp "Genie 2.0" and the two new songs on "Keeps Getting Better": the title track and "Dynamite."

As for other collaborators on the album, which will follow-up 2006's "Back to Basics," Aguilera said there's "nothing I can give away now, but there's always somebody that I'm inspired by to work with. I have to keep under wraps who that would be, just 'cause I always like the element of surprise."

Hits Set Tees Up Next Christina Aguilera Album

Beyond marking Christina Aguilera's first decade in the business, the Nov. 11 Target exclusive "Keeps Getting Better: A Decade of Hits" serves as a sneak preview for the artist's next RCA studio album.

Aguilera tells Billboard the as-yet-untitled set will arrive in summer 2009 and will be mostly produced by Linda Perry.

"With my last album, I had music that was very '20s, '30s and '40s, and was very detailed and part of a very specific genre and sound," she says. "But with this new album, I wanted to go in a completely opposite direction-a very futuristic, robotic sound and computer-sounding vocals. I'm experimenting with my voice in ways I've never done before, almost like a technical, computer-generated sound, which is different for me because I'm the type of vocalist that just belts. I'm always inspired by new things because I get bored."

"The album is very pop and very upbeat, and it's inspired by [Andy] Warhol and the late-'60s scene," says RCA senior VP of marketing Scott Seviour, who adds that Aguilera has been in the studio as often as she can, considering she became a mother in January. "Once you hear the new material you'll have a very clear idea what the direction of it is."

As for "Keep Getting Better," it includes new versions of "Genie in a Bottle" and "Beautiful," titled "Genie 2.0" and "You Are What You Are (Beautiful)," respectively, plus the new songs "Keeps Getting Better" and "Dynamite." Staples such as "Dirty," "Come On Over" and "Hurt" also appear.

Produced by Perry, the new and remixed tracks all feature "futuristic sounds with beats driven more toward dance music," Aguilera says. "This time around, I'm playing with this superhero element based on the fact that fans have grown up with me since I was 17 and have continually supported my changes throughout the years."

Aguilera is planning to tour next year.

Michael Jackson Eyeing London Run?

There is credence to ongoing speculation that Michael Jackson might be booked for a long engagement at the O2 Arena in London, though no deal has been reached nor performances contracted.

But a source confirms that there is a "standing offer with no expiration" from AEG Live for Jackson to play at the O2. The 02 is operated by Anschutz Entertainment Group, and any Jackson stand at the 02 would almost certainly be promoted by AEG Live, the live entertainment arm of AEG.

AEG Live previously promoted long and hugely successful runs at the O2 by Prince and Spice Girls.

Jackson has rarely performed in public in recent years. Last week, he denied a claim by his brother Jermaine that the entire Jackson family would convene for a tour in 2009. Sources say Michael's decision not to participate may stem from his desire to do his own touring next year.

In related news, it was a banner week for Jackson's seminal 1982 album "Thriller," which jumped 41-1 on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart after selling 31,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan (a 1,000% increase).

Britney, Justin Join Madonna In Los Angeles

Madonna had a little help from some friends at the Los Angeles stop of her Sticky and Sweet tour last night (Nov. 6) at Dodger Stadium, as both Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake turned up as surprise guest stars.

The former wowed the crowd during the third song of the night, "Human Nature," while Timberlake joined Madonna on "4 Minutes" towards the end of the show.

Spears, in her first public performance since the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, emerged from the back of the stage to the roar of the crowd, looking radiant in black heels and slacks, a white ruffled dress shirt and straight blond hair.

Singing with a mic in hand, she sauntered out for a diva matchup at the end of the catwalk. Meanwhile, every camera phone in the venue had already been whisked out to capture the moment while flashbulbs were firing at record speed.

After arriving alongside the guitar-wielding Madonna, the latter said, in mock surprise, "Oops! Hey Britney!" and then later, "she's not your bitch!" before Spears sang her own infamous lyric, "It's Britney, bitch." And then after about two minutes on stage, it was over. Spears was lowered beneath the floor and Madonna carried on to the next number.

Timberlake was another surprise, and he too received a thunderous response from the crowd on "4 Minutes," the song on which he guests from Madonna's "Hard Candy" album. Madonna and Timberlake reprised the choreography and staging they employed for the last time they sang the song live, during a promo performance at New York City's Roseland Ballroom in April. Much like Spears, once Timberlake's song was over, he vanished from the stage.

All told, Madonna performed nine of the 12 songs from "Hard Candy," along with 11 older tunes like "Ray of Light," "Music" and "Into the Groove." She played guitar on a hard-rocking version of "Borderline" and sang a moving rendition of the "Evita" song "You Must Love Me." Most surprising was the segment of the show where she solicited song requests from the crowd. She ultimately decided on the 1985 oldie "Dress You Up," and then led the stadium in a sing-a-long.

Celebrities on hand in the audience included Fergie, Drew Barrymore, Heidi Klum, Nicole Ritchie and Jennifer Lopez.

Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour next visits the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday and Sunday. The North American leg of the tour wraps on Nov. 30 and then heads to South America on Dec. 3 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The tour is currently scheduled to conclude on Dec. 21 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Guide Review - T.I. featuring Rihanna - "Live Your Life"

The most instantly memorable item about T.I.'s smash hit "Live Your Life," featuring contributions from Rihanna, is the exotic sounding segment which kicks the song off. It is an exerpt from the pop song "Dragostea din tei" which swept Europe in 2004 as recorded by the Moldovan group O-Zone. YouTube fans will also remember a unique dance take on the song by Gary Brolsma in which it is titled "Numa Numa." Love it or hate it, Rihanna's warbling is one of the most instantly memorable sounds in the pop music of 2008.

What about the rest of "Live Your Life?" It is a strongly upbeat and affirming response to critics of T.I.'s personal life and legal troubles. The live and let live attitude is an appealing one in general. This would be a strong song lyrically even without the hook of "Dragostea din tei."

At this point it is becoming increasingly clear that Rihanna is not only adept at creating her own pop smashes, but is also becoming a most valuable player for others. Shakira, Maroon 5, and now T.I. have now all been beneficiaries of her Midas touch. Rihanna is the breakout pop artist of the decade.

Mariah Carey's 1993 hit "Hero," covered for charity by the 2008 finalists in the TV talent series "The X Factor," debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart yesterday (Nov. 2), while Pink's "Funhouse" (LaFace/Sony BMG) entered at the top of the new album survey.

The new version of "Hero," released by Syco Music/Sony BMG, benefits British servicemen and women injured in the line of duty, and has outdone Carey's original, which peaked at No. 7 some 15 years ago. It unseated last week's new entry at the summit, Girls Aloud's "The Promise" (Fascination/Polydor), which fell to No. 2, as Pink's former No. 1 "So What" dropped another place to No. 3.

Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" (Virgin) moved up another point to No. 6, while Jack White & Alicia Keys" "Another Way To Die" (RCA), fueled by the opening of the James Bond movie for which it provides the theme, "Quantum of Solace," vaulted 18-10.

On the album chart, "Funhouse" is Pink's first British No. 1 after three consecutive No. 3 peaks, with "M!zzundaztood" (2001), "Try This" (2003) and "I'm Not Dead" (2006). The new set restricted Snow Patrol to a No. 2 entry with "A Hundred Million Suns" (Fiction/Polydor), while AC/DC's "Black Ice" (Columbia) fell 1-3. There were also top 10 debuts for Celine Dion's "My Love -- The Essential Collection) (Sony BMG) at No. 5, Irish AC favorite Daniel O'Donnell's "Country Boy" (DMG TV) at No. 6 and Bloc Party's "Intimacy" (Wichita Recordings) at No. 8.

The worldwide superstar recently made news when she broke the record for making the biggest leap to No.1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart when "Womanizer" shot from No.96 to No.1. John Legend made his mark by showing up fully coated in vintage Philadelphia soul, but this aptly titled third album finds him shelving his silky throwback vibe for a collection of tracks more interested in 808s and heartbreak. "Evolver" opens with shiny 1984 club-bounce ("Green Light," quickly commandeered by André 3000), moves directly into vocoded Kanye West ("It's Over") and involves lots of Flash Gordon swoops and sweeps ("Good Morning"). Legend's voice remains beyond reproach, but for a guy who's an oasis of style and soul in a sea of synthetic, robo-call R&B, at times it seems like he's playing catch-up. Legend scores far better when he sticks to his strengths, like on the reggae-twisted "No Other Love," the ready-made Obama rally theme "If You're Out There" and the soaring "Everybody Knows," a tear-streaked lament that ends with the great line, "I wish you the best/I guess." —Jeff Vrabel

AC/DC Debuts At No. 1 With 784,000

AC/DC earns its first Billboard 200-topping debut with "Black Ice," blasting onto the chart with the second-biggest sales frame this year. The Columbia set, released exclusively through Wal-mart, Sam's Club and AC/DC's Web site, moved 784,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

That number only trails the opening frame for Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" (Def Jam), which bowed with 1.005 million units earlier this year. "Black Ice" also provides AC/DC's best sales frame since SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.

AC/DC topped the chart in early 1982 with "For Those About To Rock We Salute You," which climbed to No. 1, but did not debut there. Thanks to deep discounts at Wal-Mart, the band's back catalog enjoyed a huge week, shifting 92,000 copies combined. "Back in Black" went from 9,000 to 21,000, while "High Voltage" rocketed from 4,000 to 11,000.

Debuting at No. 2 is the soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" with 297,000. That's the best debut sales week for a theatrical film soundtrack since November 2005, when "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" started at No. 2 with 317,000. "HSM3" is the first in the series of the "High School Musical" films to debut in movie theaters as opposed to on the Disney Channel.

T.I.'s Grand Hustle/Atlantic album "Paper Trail" falls 2-3 with 93,000 copies, a sales decrease of 29%. With a 50% dip, Kenny Chesney's "Lucky Old Sun" drops from the summit to No. 4 with 88,000. Metallica's "Death Magnetic" (Warner Bros.) continues its decline 4-5 with 52,000 (+3%), while Kid Rock's "Rock N Roll Jesus" (Atlantic) clings to No. 6 for a second week at 40,000 (-11%).

R&B/Gospel outfit Mary Mary notches its second top 10 debut as "The Sound" (My Block/Columbia) begins at No. 7 with 37,000. The duo's self-titled set peaked at No. 8 in 2005.

Slipping 24% to 31,000, Ne-Yo's "Year of the Gentleman" (Def Jam) keeps the No. 8 spot warm for a second week. Amid a tumultuous week in the news for the star, Jennifer Hudson's self-titled Arista set slips 5-9 with 29,000 (-37%). Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" re-enters the top tier 12-10 on a 2% decrease to 25,000.

One slot below, Adele earns a new peak on the big chart as her Columbia effort "19" climbs 46-11 after her appearance on "Saturday Night Live." Sales rose from 11,000 to 25,000.

Hank Williams III bows at No. 18 with "Damn Right Rebel Proud" (Sidewalk) with 20,000, easily scoring his best charting album. His previous best came with 2006's "Straight to Hell," which peaked at No. 73.

Lee Ann Womack starts at No. 23 with "Call Me Crazy" (MCA Nashville), after moving 17,000. Her last set, 2005's "There's More Where That Came From," debuted at No. 12.

Other debuts this week include post-hardcore band Escape The Fate's "This War Is Ours" (Epitaph, No. 35, 13,000), Polyvinyl act Of Montreal's "Skeletal Lamping" (No. 38, 12,000), country singer Craig Morgan's "That's Why" (BNA, No. 39, 12,000), Brett Dennen's "Hope for the Hopeless" (Dualtone/Downtown, No. 41, 11,000) and Labelle's "Back To Now," the funk trio's first set since 1978 (Verve, No. 45, 11,000).

At 7.07 million units, sales this week are up 8.3% from last week's sum and down 15.2% from the same week last year.

In the late 1980's and early 1990's, Guns 'n Roses racked up 6 top 10 pop singles including the #1 smash "Sweet Child O' Mine." Guide Review - T.I. featuring Rihanna - "Live Your Life"

The most instantly memorable item about T.I.'s smash hit "Live Your Life," featuring contributions from Rihanna, is the exotic sounding segment which kicks the song off. It is an exerpt from the pop song "Dragostea din tei" which swept Europe in 2004 as recorded by the Moldovan group O-Zone. YouTube fans will also remember a unique dance take on the song by Gary Brolsma in which it is titled "Numa Numa." Love it or hate it, Rihanna's warbling is one of the most instantly memorable sounds in the pop music of 2008.

What about the rest of "Live Your Life?" It is a strongly upbeat and affirming response to critics of T.I.'s personal life and legal troubles. The live and let live attitude is an appealing one in general. This would be a strong song lyrically even without the hook of "Dragostea din tei."

At this point it is becoming increasingly clear that Rihanna is not only adept at creating her own pop smashes, but is also becoming a most valuable player for others. Shakira, Maroon 5, and now T.I. have now all been beneficiaries of her Midas touch. Rihanna is the breakout pop artist of the decade.
